Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and FIPAP join forces again this coming summer to bring you those fabulously nearly bare boys & girls of Broadway in our own Pines adaptation of this wildly bawdy burlesque. "Bares" combines the naughtiness of burlesque and the razzle-dazzle of Broadway. Created by Jerry Mitchell, the show features the hottest male and female dancers on Broadway and has become one of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS' signature events. An eye-popping, show-stopping delight, the two shows will also include those tantalizing post-performance tip-dances too!

Join us for complementary cocktails half-hour prior to the performance. Don’t forget to bring your dollars to tip the dancers after the show….

Jane Powell

FIPAP is proud to present Jane Powell onstage at Whyte Hall in conversation with film historian and lecturer Howard Oboler.  Accompanied by film clips the iconic musical star will discuss and review her career spanning seven decades and including countless memorable performances.

Possessed of an extraordinarily wide-ranging operatic singing voice, Jane Powell was a radio performer from childhood. She took dancing and acting lessons, then made her film debut at 15 in Song of the Open Road (1944),

Best remembered for her roles the giant MGM musicals of the 50s, Powell starred in 18 feature films between 1944 and 1958, and in later years performed on TV and in theater to great acclaim.

On the big screen, she was a reliable actress who could also dance and sing with the best. In A Date with Judy (1948) she held her own against the brilliant Elizabeth Taylor, she matched Fred Astaire step for step in Royal Wedding (1951), crooned alongside Debbie Reynolds in Hit the Deck (1955) and may be best remembered in the fabulous Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

She worked along side film greats including Walter Pidgeon, Jeanette MacDonald, Ricardo Montalban, and Hedy Lamarr. Cliff Robertson co-starred with Ms. Powell in the 1958 musical comedy, The Girl Most Likely.

Powell worked in film and television steadily through the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, including hit TV series The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Murder She Wrote and Growing Pains. On Broadway, she replaced former MGM colleague Debbie Reynolds in the 1970s revival of Irene.  In 2003 she created the role of Mama Mizner in Stephen Sondheim’s Bounce.

Christine Ebersole

“The End of the World as We Know It Cabaret”

"Christine Ebersole contains multitudes. One way to think of her brilliant new show, “The End of the World as We Know It Cabaret,” is a whimsical, personalized answer to the cover art of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” As you may recall, that crowded illustration includes images of everyone from Hindu gurus to Oscar Wilde to Marilyn Monroe....If Ms. Ebersole is at heart a Broadway baby, her flexibility extends to jazz and gospel (and in earlier shows, but not this one, operetta). Under the guidance of her musical director and pianist, John Oddo, she breezes from one style to the next, connecting songs with personal vignettes." - Stephen Holden, New York Times.

Christine Ebersole has enchanted audiences throughout her performing career, from the Broadway stage to television series and specials, films, concert appearances, and recordings.  Ms. Ebersole received virtually every Off-Broadway award and her second Tony Award for Leading Actress in a Musical for her “dual role of a lifetime” as Edie Beale and Little Edie Beale in "Grey Gardens."  Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, the show was nominated for ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and its CD was nominated for a Grammy Award.  In 2009, Christine starred opposite Angela Lansbury and Rupert Everett in the hit revival "Blithe Spirit."
 
Other memorable New York stage performances include her Tony Award- winning performance as Dorothy Brock in the smash hit revival "42nd Street," "Steel Magnolias," "On the Twentieth Century," "Oklahoma," "Dinner at Eight" (Tony and Outer Critics Circle nominations), and "The Best Man."  She has starred in five City Center Encores! Productions, most recently receiving unanimous praise for her starring role as Margo Channing in "Applause."
 
Ms. Ebersole has appeared in many hit movies, including Tootsie, Richie Rich, Black Sheep, Amadeus, Dead Again, True Crime, and the recently released hit movie Confessions of a Shopaholic.  On television, Christine is currently a series regular on USA’s hit TV series, Royal Pains.  She was seen as the stripper Tessie Tura in Bette
Midler’s Gypsy, co-starred in the reunion film Mary and Rhoda, with Diana Ross in Double Platinum, with Jane Fonda in the critically acclaimed The Dollmaker, and had guest starring roles in such hit shows as Will and Grace, Murphy Brown, Cashmere Mafia, and Boston Legal.  Ms. Ebersole was a series regular on Saturday Night Live
during the 1981-82 season.

A seamless pairing of "March of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland," the acclaimed Off-Broadway musicals written nearly a decade apart, "Falsettos" won 1992 Tony Awards for best book and musical score. FIPAP is proud to be presenting the jaunty tale of Marvin who leaves his wife and young son to live with another man - sound familiar? Our community shows always have a way of bringing a "Pines sensibility," to them and we're certain the characters and story of "Falsettos" will reverberate within the hearts of Pines residents in a very special way this summer.

Returning for its eighth year, Pines Chefs Cook! cooking classes feature Pines chefs sharing their culinary skills at some of the most spectacular homes in the Pines. The class includes instruction, lunch, and wine.

All classes take place at the homes of the chefs.  Location and times will be emailed to you with confirmation after your ticket purchase.

About the Arts Project

Our Mission

The mission of the Fire Island Pines Arts Project, a non-profit organization, is to be integral to the creative life of our community and to aspire, through the production of accessible quality performing and fine arts events and activities, to reflect and encourage our community's cultural vitality.

A History of the Arts Project

The Fire Island Pines Arts Project has a long history of promoting and highlighting the arts - both its enthusiasts and its practitioners. Sylvan Cole and David Baker founded FIPAP over 25 years ago offering musical revues and shows which tapped into the wealth of artistic talent attracted to the Pines. From that beginning FIPAP grew to produce and present an even greater variety of performing arts events and in 1985 introduced the first of its celebrated Biennial Art Shows featuring local visual artists. The Arts Project's range of events continued to grow to include live performances by renowned musicians, singers, and comedians, curated film exhibitions, and artist salons. Most recently, FIPAP has begun offering cooking classes taught by Pines chefs and hosted its first Arts and Design show. FIPAP also has a proud record of supporting and contributing to other Pines organizations and has been a key contributor to the building and furnishing of the Whyte Hall Community Center.

Thirteenth Biennial FIPAP Art Show

A signature event in the Pines, the Biennial Art Show is the chance to view and purchase fine art pieces created by fellow Pines’ residents. All Fire Island and Pines’ residents who desire to add unique, professional and sought after artistic works to their collections eagerly anticipate this event. Whether a seasoned or beginning art collector, this juried art show will surpass your expectations, enabling you to purchase works that you’ll enjoy for years to come. A Special Preview and Luncheon for Sponsors only at 12:00 PM, followed by general admission at 1:00 PM. Free for all FIPAP members; $5.00 for non-members.

Fourteenth Biennial FIPAP Art Show Exhibitor Guidelines

The show is Saturday August 3rd, 2013, 1pm to 4pm at Whyte Hall, Fire Island Pines Community Center.

Artists wishing to be considered for inclusion are asked to follow these guidelines:

Submissions deadline is June 21, 2013.

• Submissions deadline is June 21, 2013.
• Artists are required to have a bona-fide connection to Fire Island Pines.
• Artists must submit a resume including gallery exhibition history.
• Artists must submit examples of their current work with prices by hard copy.

33.3% of any art sales will be collected as commission to FIPAP. Net proceeds will be distributed to the artists approximately 30 days following the show.

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2012

FIPAP Artist In Residence

Established in 2009, FIPAP’s Artist in Residence grant is awarded annually to a Visual Arts professional or emerging artists to assist their growth and development.  The recipient is selected from applicants by a panel of art professionals, educators and members of the FIPAP board. The grant includes a $5,000.00 gift and one month’s housing in Fire Island Pines.

The application period for the 2012 Artist Residency Program is now open and applications are now being accepted through a May 15, 2012 deadline.

The Program

The Fire Island Pines Art Project invites Visual Arts professionals and emerging artists to apply for an artist residency. Artists can enjoy a month-long working retreat in one of the world's most beautiful beach communities. This residency will include a stipend of $5000 and housing in Fire Island Pines. Candidates must submit a personal statement, resume, and examples of their work in a portfolio on disc as well as two letters of recommendation with their application. There is a $25 application fee. Items received will not be returned.

Qualifications

An artist working in the Visual Arts: Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Paper Arts, Photography, Sculpture, Textile and Fabric Arts

The Application

1. A personal statement about your work; how you heard about the Residency; and what, if any, connection you have to the Fire Island Community
2. Resume (experience, education, awards)
3. Portfolio or examples of your work on a disc
4. 2 Letters of recommendation from industry professionals, employers, etc.

2011 FIPAP Artist In Residence: Gregory D. Hayes

From Brooklyn, NY, Hayes is receiving his MFA from Brooklyn College in Painting this spring and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Rocky Mountain College of Art in 2006.  He has had 5 solo exhibitions, all in Colorado and from Brooklyn College he has received the Charles G. Shaw Award and the Bernard Horlick Memorial Scholarship. Gregory is a nominee for the Joan Mitchel Foundation Master of Fine Arts Grant.
 
Most recently his paintings have explored the ”elusive behavior of prime numbers” and he has been “exploring the idea of brushless paintings by using a paint drip method, which involves applying paint to the surface of the canvas and allow it to form natural convex circles”.

2010 Artist in Residence - Alexandra Mota de Aguiar

Alexandra Mota de Aguiar, from the Portuguese island of Madiera, works mainly with drawing in an expressionistic mode that recalls processes explored by Phillip Guston and Francis Bacon.  Using oil pastel, charcoal, graphite and gouache, she creates hybrid organic, mysteriously erotic forms.   Having completed the Advance Course in Visual Arts at Ar.Co- Centre of Art and Visual Communication in Lisbon, she has been developing her work at the Location One’s International Residency Program, Greene Street in New York City and has been accepted into the Drawing Center’s Viewing program. Alexandra lives and works in Berlin, Germany. In addition to her visual art, she has worked in fashion, video, theatre, television and publishing.

2009 Artist in Residence - Christopher Rawlins

FIPAP’s 2009 Artist In Residence grant was awarded to Christopher Rawlins for continuing work on his upcoming book “The Architecture of Horace Gifford.”  Gifford worked and lived in Fire Island Pines creating many of the most enduring beach house designs of the late mid-century.
